When leaks occur within a hot water heating system, the auto feeder adds water from the main fill line until the system comes back to the pre-set pressure. As water leaks out more is added and this continues constantly until the leak is repaired.
When new water is added to a sealed system, corrosive minerals and oxidants are also introduced. These substances that will rot out the non ferrous metals in your boiler and components.
Normally once the system is filled, the harmful by products in the water will distill over time, and eventually settle to the bottom of the boiler where they will do no harm.
Gaskets often harden over time. This can lead to leaks around the circulator pump flanges. Installing new gaskets is an easy repair that will increase the life of your system by as much as twenty five percent.
